Ginseng roots

In the second issue of GINSENG ROOTS, Craig Thompson returns home, into the heart of rural Wisconsin, to the former global capital of ginseng cultivation. We meet his sister Sarah who was excluded from BLANKETS, and the Ginseng farmers who employed Craig & his brother as children. Craig explores the problems with autobiography, the nature of memory, and the editing that necessarily follows. GINSENG ROOTS is a masterful mix of personal history set against a background of global trade, corporate agriculture, and climate change. Craig Thompson is a cartoonist and the author of the award-winning books Blankets; Good-bye, Chunky Rice; and Habibi. He was born in Michigan in 1975, and grew up in a rural farming community in central Wisconsin. His graphic novel Blankets won numerous industry awards and has been published in nearly twenty languages. Thompson lives in Portland, Oregon.
